Definition
In Ayurveda, the three vital energies (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) that are believed to govern all physical and mental functions.
Key points
- Dosha is the collective name for the three energies said to govern mind and body: Vata, Pitta and Kapha
- Each dosha arises from a pairing of the five elements, and everyone carries all three in a unique ratio
- In Ayurveda, imbalance among the doshas is considered the starting point of discomfort and illness
What is a dosha?
Dosha (Doṣa) is the collective name for the three vital energies that Ayurveda considers to govern every function of the mind and body. The three are Vata (wind), Pitta (fire) and Kapha (water).
According to the classical texts, the doshas arise from combinations of the five great elements (pancha mahabhuta): space, air, fire, water and earth. Everyone carries all three doshas, but the proportion differs from one person to the next, which is how Ayurveda accounts for individual constitution.
The three doshas at a glance
- Vata (air and space): governs movement, circulation and the nervous system. The force that moves things.
- Pitta (fire and water): governs digestion, metabolism and body heat. The force that transforms things.
- Kapha (water and earth): governs structure, stability and lubrication. The force that builds and holds things together.
Prakriti and imbalance
The ratio of doshas you are born with is called your prakriti, your natural constitution. Ayurveda considers you at your best when you stay close to that inborn balance. Diet, season, stress and lifestyle can push one dosha into excess, and this drift away from prakriti is traditionally regarded as the first step toward discomfort and, eventually, illness.
Because of this, most Ayurvedic advice is not one-size-fits-all. Recommendations for food, daily routine and treatments are chosen to calm whichever dosha has become excessive, which is why knowing your constitution comes first.

FAQFrequently asked questions
Do I have only one dosha?
No. Ayurveda holds that everyone carries all three doshas, in a ratio that differs from person to person. The ratio you are born with is called your prakriti, or natural constitution.
How can I find out my dosha?
Traditionally, a practitioner assesses your build, skin, digestion, temperament and other traits as a whole. Questionnaires and consultations with trained practitioners are the usual starting points.
Is the dosha system scientifically proven?
The doshas are a traditional framework, not a concept from modern physiology. They are best understood as Ayurveda's own model for observing individual differences, and research into the system is ongoing.
