Key points
- Agni is the digestive fire that governs digestion, absorption and metabolism
- A well-tended agni is considered the foundation of health in Ayurveda
- When agni weakens, undigested residue (ama) is said to accumulate and set the stage for illness
What is agni?
Agni literally means fire. In Ayurveda it refers to the digestive fire: the capacity to digest, absorb and metabolize what we eat, turning food into the substance of the body. It is considered one of the most important pillars of health in the entire system, and it works hand in hand with Pitta, the dosha of transformation.
Why agni matters so much
A well-known idea in Ayurveda holds that all disease begins with a disturbance of agni. When the fire burns well, food is fully digested and nourishes the body. When it weakens, digestion is left unfinished and the residue, called ama, is said to accumulate and become the soil in which discomfort and illness grow.
This is why Ayurvedic practitioners tend to ask about appetite and digestion before anything else. In this framework, what you can digest matters more than what you eat.
Tending the fire
The traditional recommendations are simple: eat at regular times, stop before you are completely full, favor warm and easily digestible meals, and make moderate use of digestive spices such as ginger. Cold, heavy and erratic eating habits are considered the quickest ways to dampen the fire.

FAQFrequently asked questions
How can I strengthen agni?
The traditional advice is to eat at regular times, stop short of fullness, favor warm and easily digestible food, and use digestive spices such as ginger in moderation.
Is agni the same as Pitta?
They are related but not identical. Pitta is the dosha of transformation as a whole, while agni refers specifically to the fire of digestion and metabolism. Classical texts describe agni as working through Pitta.
