Vata

Vāta / वात

Definition

The dosha formed from air and space, believed to govern all movement in the body: circulation, breathing, elimination and nerve impulses.

Key points

  • Vata carries the qualities of air and space and governs movement throughout the body
  • Its qualities are described as light, cold, dry, rough and mobile
  • When aggravated, Vata is traditionally linked to feeling cold, dryness, anxiety and light sleep

What is Vata?

Vata (Vāta) is one of the three doshas, the energy said to be composed of the elements air (vayu) and space (akasha). In the Ayurvedic model it governs everything in the body that moves: circulation, breathing, elimination, and the transmission of nerve impulses.

The qualities of Vata

Vata is described as light, cold, dry, rough and mobile. People with a Vata-dominant constitution are traditionally said to be slender, quick and active, with lively imaginations and a talent for starting things.

When Vata goes out of balance

When Vata becomes excessive, it is traditionally said to show up as feeling cold, dry skin, constipation, restlessness or anxiety, and shallow sleep. Warm and easily digestible meals, a regular daily rhythm, and calming routines such as abhyanga (warm oil massage) are the traditional ways of settling it. Of the three doshas, Vata is considered the quickest to go out of balance, which is why so much Ayurvedic daily-routine advice is aimed at keeping it steady.
