What is Pitta?
Pitta is one of the three doshas, the energy said to be composed of the elements fire (agni) and water (jala). In the Ayurvedic model it governs everything the body transforms: digestion, metabolism, the regulation of body heat, and even vision. It is closely tied to agni, the digestive fire at the center of Ayurvedic thinking about health.
The qualities of Pitta
Pitta is described as hot, sharp, light and slightly oily. People with a Pitta-dominant constitution are traditionally said to be of medium build, strong-willed and focused, with a natural bent for leadership.
When Pitta goes out of balance
When Pitta becomes excessive, it is traditionally said to show up as feeling flushed or overheated, stomach discomfort, redness or itchiness of the skin, and a short temper. Cooling foods and a cool, calm environment are the traditional ways of settling it. In practical terms, that often means going easy on chili, alcohol and long hours in the sun during high-Pitta periods such as midsummer.
