Prakriti

Prakṛti / प्रकृति

Definition

Your inborn constitution: the personal balance of the three doshas set at conception, which Ayurveda treats as the unchanging baseline of your health.

Key points

  • Prakriti is the inborn balance of the doshas, considered set at conception
  • It is treated as a lifelong baseline and the compass for personal daily care
  • Ayurveda pairs it with vikriti, the current state of imbalance, and aims to steer the one back toward the other

What is prakriti?

Prakriti is your inborn constitution. Ayurveda holds that at conception, each person receives their own balance of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha), and that this original ratio remains the baseline of their makeup for life. In Sanskrit the word also means nature, or the original form of a thing, which is precisely the idea.

One balance per person

Everyone carries all three doshas; no two people carry them in the same proportion. One person runs Vata-dominant, another burns Pitta-hot, a third holds two doshas in near-equal measure. That personal blend is treated as the ground plan for build, digestion, skin and hair tendencies, and temperament: the reason Ayurveda begins with the individual rather than with a universal prescription.

Prakriti and vikriti

The tradition's key move is to separate the baseline from the current state. Prakriti is what you were born with; vikriti is where you are right now, pushed off balance by season, diet, stress and habit. Care, in the Ayurvedic sense, is the work of steering vikriti back toward prakriti: not becoming someone else, but returning to yourself.

Why knowing yours helps

Knowing your inborn tendencies turns general advice into personal advice: which foods, routines and seasons ask more caution of you, and which suit you natively. Rough self-assessment through questionnaires is a fine start; an accurate reading takes an experienced practitioner.

FAQFrequently asked questions

What is prakriti?

Your inborn constitution. Ayurveda holds that the personal balance of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) is set at conception and forms the baseline of your makeup for life. That original balance is your prakriti.

Can prakriti change?

In the traditional view, prakriti itself does not change. What changes is your current state, called vikriti, which drifts with season, diet, stress and habits. Care, in Ayurveda, means guiding vikriti back toward prakriti.

How do I find out my prakriti?

Build, digestion, skin and hair tendencies, and temperament all offer clues, and questionnaires can give a rough picture. An accurate reading takes experience, so consult a trained practitioner if you want a proper assessment.
