Virechana

Virecana / विरेचन

Definition

Therapeutic purgation, one of the five actions of panchakarma and the one most commonly performed, traditionally chosen when Pitta has accumulated.

Key points

  • Virechana is therapeutic purgation and one of the five actions of panchakarma
  • It is the procedure traditionally chosen for accumulated Pitta, and is often scheduled in autumn
  • It is the most commonly performed of the five and is carried out under medical supervision

What is virechana?

Virechana is therapeutic purgation, the panchakarma procedure that clears downward. Of the five actions described in the classics it is the one most often actually performed, which makes it the procedure most people encounter when they meet panchakarma in practice rather than on paper.

Where it fits

Virechana is assigned to Pitta, the hot and sharp dosha, and is traditionally scheduled in autumn, the season in which Pitta is said to accumulate. Where vamana works upward for Kapha, virechana works downward for Pitta, and the two are usually explained as a pair.

Preparation and recovery

As with every procedure in the sequence, the treatment itself is only the middle of it. The body is prepared first through oiling and sweating, and afterward there is a staged recovery diet that begins with thin gruel and works back toward normal food. Skipping either end is not a shortcut; the tradition treats the preparation and the recovery as part of the procedure.

Under supervision

Virechana requires diagnosis and management by trained practitioners. It is not something to attempt on the basis of a description.
