Vamana

Vamana / वमन

Definition

Therapeutic emesis, the first of the five actions of panchakarma, traditionally chosen when Kapha has accumulated.

Key points

  • Vamana is therapeutic emesis and one of the five actions of panchakarma
  • It is the procedure traditionally chosen for accumulated Kapha, and is often scheduled in spring
  • It is a clinical procedure carried out under medical supervision, with preparation and recovery phases

What is vamana?

Vamana is therapeutic emesis, and it is the first of the five actions that give panchakarma its name. Of the five, it is the one that works upward, clearing from the upper body.

Where it fits

Vamana is the procedure the classics assign to Kapha, the heavy and accumulating dosha, and it is traditionally scheduled in spring, the season when Kapha is said to build. Like every panchakarma procedure it is not performed in isolation: it follows preparatory treatments, principally internal and external oiling (snehana) and therapeutic sweating (swedana), and it is followed by a recovery phase in which food is reintroduced in stages.

An important distinction

Vamana is a clinical procedure. It requires diagnosis, supervision and aftercare from trained practitioners, and it belongs to a different category from the oil treatments offered as relaxation under the Ayurvedic name outside India. If you encounter panchakarma as a retreat programme, it is worth asking which of the five actions, if any, are actually part of it.

This entry introduces a traditional system of thought for general knowledge. It is not medical advice and is not intended to diagnose, treat or prevent any condition. If you are considering treatment, please consult qualified practitioners and your medical professional.
