What is basti?
Basti is a medicated enema, delivered using either an oil or a herbal decoction. It is one of the five actions of panchakarma, and it holds a status the other four do not: many classical sources describe it as the single most important treatment in the entire system.
Why the classics rate it so highly
The reasoning is anatomical in the tradition's own terms. Vata is the dosha of movement, the one held responsible when things become irregular, and its principal seat is said to be the colon. A treatment delivered there therefore acts directly on Vata at its source, and on apana vayu, the downward moving aspect of Vata that governs elimination.
Since Vata is also the dosha the tradition considers hardest to settle and quickest to disturb, a procedure that addresses it at its seat earns a great deal of attention in the texts.
