- Marma means a vital point, where muscle, vessel, ligament, bone and joint meet
- The Sushruta Samhita maps 107 of them across the body
- The knowledge began in surgery and combat and later became a basis for gentle treatment
What is marma?
Marma means a vital point. In the classical definition these are places where five things meet: muscle, vessel, ligament, bone and joint. The Sushruta Samhita, the classic richest in surgical material, maps 107 of them across the body.
From places not to wound
The marma map did not begin as a therapy. It grew out of surgery, battlefield injury and martial arts, as a catalogue of the places where a deep wound is most dangerous. It was, first of all, a map of where not to cut.
The therapeutic reading came later and follows from the same premise. If these points are where the body is most concentrated and most vulnerable, then treating them attentively and gently becomes a way into the whole system. That inversion, from danger map to treatment map, is what makes marma distinctive.
Marma therapy today
At Ayurvedic clinics and treatment rooms, marma work means oiling the points with light circular contact rather than deep pressure. It is frequently combined with abhyanga, and it appears within panchakarma programmes as well. It is most often discussed in the context of settling Vata, the dosha most prone to becoming unsettled.
Before you book
These are delicate places, so the work belongs with a practitioner who has trained in it. The point worth carrying away is that stronger is not better here: gentleness is the technique, not a watered down version of it. If you are pregnant or have an existing condition, raise it before the session.

FAQFrequently asked questions
What are marma points?
Vital points on the body where, in the classical definition, muscle, vessel, ligament, bone and joint meet. The Sushruta Samhita maps 107 of them.
What is marma therapy?
Gentle oil work on these points, using light circular contact rather than deep pressure. It is often combined with [abhyanga](/en/term/abhyanga/), the full body oil massage.
Is stronger pressure better?
No. Gentleness is treated as the essence of the technique, not a limitation of it. Because the points are delicate, the work is done by an experienced practitioner, and anyone pregnant or with an existing condition should ask first.
