Nasya
Nasya / नस्य
Definition
Administration of medicated oil or herbal liquid through the nose, based on the classical idea that the nose is the doorway to the head, and one of the five actions of panchakarma.
Key points
- Nasya delivers medicated oil or herbal liquid through the nose
- It rests on the classical statement that the nose is the doorway to the head
- A gentle daily version exists, in which a little oil is applied just inside the nostrils
What is nasya?
Nasya is the practice of taking medicated oil or a herbal preparation in through the nose. Behind it sits a single line from the classical texts that the whole practice rests on: the nose is the doorway to the head. If the area above the neck is what you want to reach, this is the route the tradition uses. Nasya is also counted among the five actions of panchakarma.
Traditional role
Ayurveda treats everything above the neck as a region of its own, the place where the senses gather. Nasya is described as working on heaviness and congestion held there, which connects it to Kapha accumulating in the head, and to Vata becoming dry and unsettled. Full nasya is preceded by preparation, typically oil massage of the head and steam, with the practitioner choosing the substance and the quantity.
The daily version
There is also a gentle form meant for everyday use, called pratimarsha nasya: a small amount of sesame oil or a dedicated nasya oil applied just inside the nostrils with a clean fingertip. It belongs to dinacharya, the daily routine, and is used as protection in dry seasons and dusty environments.
Cautions
Nasya is traditionally avoided when there is inflammation or disease of the nose or sinuses, during pregnancy, and straight after eating or drinking alcohol. Sensitivity to oils varies, so even the daily form is begun with a very small amount. If you have congestion or pain, see a medical professional first.
