Dhatu

Dhātu / धातु

Definition

The seven tissues of the body, formed one from the next in sequence as food is transformed by the digestive fire.

Key points

  • The seven dhatus are plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, marrow and reproductive tissue
  • Each is formed from the one before it, so an earlier gap limits everything after it
  • Ojas is described as the final product of the whole sequence

What are the dhatus?

Dhatu means that which supports or holds, and it names the seven tissues of the body. What distinguishes the Ayurvedic account from a simple list of tissue types is that these seven are described as a sequence: each is formed out of the one before it, as agni, the digestive fire, transforms what has been eaten.

The seven, in order

Rasa (plasma) → rakta (blood) → mamsa (muscle) → medas (fat) → asthi (bone) → majja (marrow) → shukra (reproductive tissue).

The consequence of arranging them this way is the interesting part. If an earlier stage is not properly formed, nothing downstream of it can be either. A problem that appears in the later tissues is therefore read as potentially originating much earlier in the chain, which is why Ayurvedic assessment tends to work backward from where a symptom shows up.

Where it leads

Having passed through all seven transformations, the process is said to yield ojas, the subtle essence associated with vitality and resilience. That places ojas at the end of a long production line rather than making it something that can be supplemented directly.

The reverse case is equally instructive. When digestion does not keep up, the tradition says ama, undigested residue, forms partway along, and the tissues built afterward are of poorer quality. Each tissue also has its own channel (srotas), so where the flow is blocked shapes how the trouble presents.

FAQFrequently asked questions

What are the dhatus?

The seven tissues that make up the body. The word means that which supports, and they are understood to be formed in sequence as [agni](/en/term/agni/) transforms food.

What are the seven dhatus in order?

Rasa (plasma), rakta (blood), mamsa (muscle), medas (fat), asthi (bone), majja (marrow) and shukra (reproductive tissue), in that order.

How do the dhatus relate to [ojas](/en/term/ojas/)?

Ojas is described as the final product of the complete seven stage transformation. If digestion falters, [ama](/en/term/ama/) forms partway through and the quality of the tissues declines instead.
